Homework:
Math: Big test Tuesday. We will go deeper into Division. Science: Tuesday and Thursday we will learn how to examine the properties of minerals to identify them. Homework:
Math: we will be studying more about division
Reading: we are working on comparing the themes, characters, and plots between to works by the same author. Science: Tuesday and Thursday we will continue work without mock rocks and determine ways to separate minerals from rock. We will also find out what happened to the shiny stuff we noticed in our rock.
Room 65 impressed last week. They are doing so well with complex word problems, and getting better and better with recognizing cause and effect, and asking lots of questions as they read. We had lots of fun with our crayfish, and had several great career presenters. Thank you for coming in and telling us about your careers.
Congratulations to our new student council reps; Ashley and Katie (Makayla will be alternate). Every presenter gave fantastic, focused talks. I was very impressed with the quality of presentations.
Standard subtraction algorithm
I will not teach the standard algorithm where you line up numbers and subtract down the columns. When I ask for another method I will expect everyone to be able to use that method. If students use it for other subtraction problems I will not dock points, however, I will not be able to coach them on the nuances of that technique. I will teach them other ways. Here are the reasons
Last week was a fantastic week. The class is definitively showing great math progress. In the language Arts and Science, I saw great understanding about adaptations and diversity in different biomes. Students also showed that they know how to compare and contrast as they read, and that they can write responses that ask them to. We showed we need some help with predicates and subjects. The students can identify them with single sentences, but struggle within a normal, multi paragraph text. We will continue work there as we switch focus to adverbs this week. We will continue to work on comparing and contrasting in our science reading and writing.
This week's math Videos. Remember it is preferred to do on Canvas, but this is here in case you can't. 3-3 3-4 3-5 3-6 I am excited about these lessons. I spent a ton of time this weekend trying to refine them.
Important notes Thank you to all those who sent pencils. It is a HUGE help.
Reading logs: Please make sure that you are checking the reading logs and signing daily. Getting in reading time is the single most important thing to helping your student be a better reader. Please include the title of the book, and push your child to read more and more difficult text. Ask questions to prompt them to better responses on their log. Take them deep with questions. Also check red folders. I am sending home missing assignment notes when assignments are incomplete. NExt steps and suggestions will be on the sheet. Grades: Grades will be coming in more frequently now. Remember the assignments and quizzes I give right now are at grade level, in reading. So look at what is catching them off guard. Look at the sheets I return. But know that we are working towards mastery of a standard that is meant to be mastered by the end of the year. In math, Quick checks will be coming home 2-3 times a week. Those are minor grades, but let you and I know what your student needs to work on. I pull groups and adjust instruction based on performance on these checks. The students are progressing well. |
